Powell River, BC, Canada is the largest community located on the upper portion of the sunshine Coast region sitting at the foot of the Malaspina Peninsula. The commercial centre of the community is Westview. The main location for many amenities, restaurants and shops. The Powell River region includes the areas of Myrtle Point, Lang Bay, Cranberry and Wildwood.
The historical past of the Powell River area is remembered in the local museum but best preserved 3 m (1.8 mi.) north of Westview in the historical Powell River Townsite. The Powell River Townsite, since 1995 has been recognized as an official "Heritage District", designated by the Canadian Federal Government. It was built between 1911 and 1930 centered around the Powell River Paper Company.
There is a good selection of shops including malls, coffee shops, art galleries, accommodations, restaurants and retail in the Powell River Townsite area and in the community of Powell River, BC.
The older townsite area has many older character houses and the said to be, longest running cinema complex in BC, The Patricia Theatre. The community shows an interest in flower and vegetable gardens displaying many rainbow colours during the spring and summer seasons.
Powell River, the river the community is built around, is only 32 miles long which is the second shortest river in world. But the area is not short on outdoor adventures. The area of Powell River, BC accommodates a varied list of activity interests offering many outdoor experiences. All thanks to its surrounding landscape.
There are looming mountains, ocean coastlines, islands, rivers, forests and many, many lakes connected by gravel logging roads. Because of the environment fishing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, boating, swimming, mountain biking, road cycling, beach combing (we prefer beach worshiping), golf, off roading, scuba diving and wildlife viewing are all very popular.
The over 30 lakes in the area create some wicked adventures. Take Powell Lake, for instance, with Goat Island in the middle. Windsor, Lois, Horseshoe, Dodd and Goat Lake develop a great waterway tour called the Powell River Canoe Route. Connecting with these lakes and some others, trekking through forests and valleys, is the 180 km hiking and backpacking trail named the Sunshine Coast Trail.
A short 15-20 minute drive away in Lund, BC is where heaven begins for many kayakers... as it is a west coast launching point to begin exploring the kayaking and boating playground called Desolation Sound.
